Brass Caption Head
SEAN PHELAN is currently Assistant Director of Athletic Bands and Spirit Groups at University of Houston. He holds a master’s degree in conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as well as a bachelor’s in music education and mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Sean’s drum corps career began in 2007 with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. In his time marching there, he served as horn sergeant, featured soloist, and drum major and received the 2012 Jim Jones Leadership award from DCI. Upon aging out, Sean joined the brass staff as intern, instructor, and then ultimately as caption head for the 2018 season.
Most recently, he was the Director of Athletic Bands at University of Minnesota, Duluth, and prior to that, he taught at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, TX, where he led the Hawk Band to appearances in the finals of the Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional Championship and in the Texas UIL State Marching Contest. Previously, he was Director of Orchestras and Associate Director of Bands at Oconomowoc High School in Wisconsin. While in Oconomowoc, Sean was also principal bassist and then Music Director of the Lake Country Orchestra. He has been an adjudicator for WSMA marching band contests and has designed and consulted with several marching programs across the Midwest.
